Amazon Announces Job Cuts Amid Restructuring Efforts

On Wednesday, Amazon revealed its plan to eliminate 16,000 internal positions as part of a reorganization aimed at cutting down on management layers and enhancing operational efficiency.

This move marks a continuation of the tech giant’s broader strategy to tackle bureaucratic challenges and promote greater employee engagement. According to Beth Galetti, Amazon’s senior vice president of people experience and technology, impacted U.S. employees will have a 90-day window to explore other roles within the company. Those who do not find new positions will receive severance pay along with transition support.

Galetti highlighted the company’s ongoing commitment to refining its organizational structure by flattening hierarchies and increasing accountability. In her message, she reassured both employees and stakeholders that while adjustments will be necessary, large-scale layoffs won’t be a regular occurrence.

This announcement follows a previous round of layoffs in October, bringing the total number of cuts to 30,000 over the last three months. These layoffs reflect CEO Andy Jassy’s focus on addressing challenges that have surfaced after a surge in hiring during the pandemic significantly increased the workforce size.

Earlier reports indicated that Jassy attributed culture issues to the prior layoffs, and he has also noted that AI technology is expected to take over some roles in the near future.

As the second-largest private employer in the U.S., Amazon appears to be bracing for considerable shifts in its workforce due to advancements in AI. In a memo sent to employees, Jassy indicated that the company anticipates reducing its overall staff in the coming years as AI improves efficiency across various departments.

His message also underscored the potential effects of AI on both corporate positions, like software developers, and warehouse staff. Jassy mentioned that AI will enhance functionalities such as inventory management, demand forecasting, and robotic operations in fulfillment centers.

As of September 30, Amazon had around 1.57 million employees, mostly working in the company’s fulfillment and warehouse operations, with the recent layoffs accounting for about 4.6 percent of the workforce in that sector.

Interestingly, news of the layoffs reached some employees before the official announcement. An internal meeting titled “Project Dawn” was mistakenly scheduled and hinted at impacted staff in the U.S., Canada, and Costa Rica. An email discussing the situation quickly circulated on internal forums and platforms like Reddit, where employees shared their thoughts on the anticipated cuts.
