Amazon Prime Day 2024 breaks record, US online sales hit $14.2B

According to Adobe Analytics research, U.S. shoppers spent a record $14.2 billion through the online retailer during Amazon’s two-day Prime Day sale, up 11% from last year and in line with expectations.

E-commerce giant Amazon announced Thursday that the 2024 event will be its biggest Prime Day sale ever.

According to market research firm Numerator, the average household spent about $152 on Amazon during Prime Day sales.

“Prime Day 2024 was a huge success thanks to the millions of Prime members around the world who turned to Amazon for great deals, along with our employees, delivery partners and merchants around the world,” Doug Herrington, CEO of Worldwide Sales, said in a statement.

According to Adobe, consumers flocked online to find deep discounts on electronics, clothing and small appliances.

According to the data, mobile device sales in particular accounted for nearly half of all purchases, with $7 billion spent on mobile devices over the two days (up 18.6% from last year).

According to Numerator, some of the best-selling items during the Prime Day sale included Amazon Fire TV sticks, protein shakes, and trash bags.

Consumers also stocked up on school supplies this year, with Amazon’s Prime Day event turning the normally slow shopping month of July into back-to-school shopping season.

Rivals have followed suit, with Walmart, Target and China-based Shein rushing to launch back-to-school sales in early July ahead of Amazon’s big sale.

Spending on backpacks, lunch boxes, stationery and other office and school supplies surged 216% over the two-day period above average June sales levels, Adobe said.

Spending on children’s clothing also rose 165% above average sales for the same period in June, the data showed.

Amazon launched Prime Day in 2015, a special sale ahead of the holiday season aimed at attracting more Prime members, who pay $139 a year for shipping and streaming privileges.

As of March, Amazon had about 180 million U.S. subscribers, up 8% from last year, according to market research firm Consumer Intelligence Research Partners.
