Amazon streamlines its streaming services as Freevee app closes next month

Amazon’s Freevee App Set to Shut Down

Amazon is preparing to discontinue its ad-supported Freevee app, with plans to transition its content to the main video platforms. Users have been informed that they can continue using the app until August 2025.

The Freevee service currently features an array of movies and TV shows, including options like “ju-just-request-duty” and “Bosch: Legacy.” A message on the app encourages users to keep enjoying their favorite titles and live TV for free on Prime Video, noting no subscription is necessary.

Since its launch in 2019, Freevee has provided users with a free streaming service. With this upcoming change, Prime Video will become the exclusive home for Freevee’s shows, movies, and live content.

Previously, Amazon had hinted at phasing out the Freevee branding late last year. According to an Amazon spokesperson, Prime members won’t see a change in the content available to them. They will have access to a wide selection of free streaming offerings, including originals from Amazon MGM Studios and a sizable library of licensed movies and series.

The company revealed in November its goal to simplify the viewing experience for customers. Over the years, Amazon has expanded its Prime Video offerings, and early in 2024, it started monitoring customer preferences for potential ad-free options. Prime Video is a competitor to platforms like Netflix, Disney+, and others, making this transition significant in the streaming landscape.
