Backlash Over He-Man Reboot Trailer

A new reboot of the Masters of the Universe series is generating some controversy, particularly following a teaser trailer that reimagines the iconic character He-Man as a modern-day office worker before returning to his home planet, Eternia.

The trailer, launched by Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel Studios on Thursday, quickly gained traction, racking up around 15 million views on YouTube within the first two days. This rapid release has ignited debates on various social media platforms. Critics argue that Hollywood seems to be altering traditionally masculine figures to fit contemporary workplace norms, while others believe it might be a satire pointing to political correctness.

In this latest adaptation, He-Man is portrayed by Nicholas Galitzine. The character has a long history dating back to the early 1980s and is often seen as a representation of masculine ideals characterized by strength and moral integrity.

The trailer presents He-Man’s origin story before shifting to a scene where he’s seated in a corporate cubicle. There’s even a nameplate on his desk that reads “Adam Glenn,” referring to his alter ego, accompanied by a pronoun display indicating “he/him.”

During a particularly revealing moment, his boss reprimands him, saying, “Being obsessed with otaku stories and sword stories is not good for human resources.” The trailer then shows He-Man reclaiming his power sword, heading back to Eternia, and ultimately confronting his main nemesis, Skeletor.

According to reports, the film focuses on Adam as he teams up with close allies to “embrace his true destiny as He-Man, the most powerful man in the universe.”

Reactions from fans online are mixed. Some are unsure whether the portrayal represents a clever critique of current workplace culture or if it’s another case of Hollywood pushing progressive norms into traditionally male-dominated narratives.

One user on a social media platform expressed frustration, stating, “Now they create the Masters of the Universe and give them the He-Man synonym. These people won’t stop until they ruin everything.” Conversely, another commenter suggested that critics may be overlooking what the trailer is really about, implying it could inspire men to reclaim their identity. “He escapes from this overbearing world to have a high-altitude adventure. This could be the movie that encourages men to be men again. Don’t knock it until you see it,” they remarked.

Interestingly, some users found the scene to reflect disdain for human resources, leaving them feeling “cautiously optimistic” about the film’s direction.

Meanwhile, similar conversations are happening throughout Hollywood, as various studios continue to reinterpret and revamp classic series for today’s audiences. Just recently, the latest “Star Trek” series faced backlash, with fans branding it as “woke.” Actress Gina Yaschel defended her own show, asserting that “Star Trek” has always had a progressive aspect.

As of now, Amazon MGM and Mattel Studios have not responded to requests for further comment.
