American Airlines is tapping into nostalgia as it prepares for its 100th anniversary by launching a retro-themed trading card for passengers. These cards will be available starting in early May, directly from pilots on select flights, with plans to broaden availability during the summer travel season.
The trading cards feature a blend of modern and historical aircraft that symbolize the airline’s rich heritage. Among them are current models like the Airbus A321neo and Boeing 787, along with classic ones such as the DC-3, 707-123, and MD-80. Captain Alan Johnson, the airline’s vice president of operations, remarked that these cards represent a century of memorable experiences shared among pilots, planes, and travelers.
This initiative not only offers images and technical specifications of the aircraft but, frankly, it also serves as a fun collectible for aviation fans. Passengers can request these cards from pilots, but they’ll be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, which makes it a bit of a race to see who gets one first. American Airlines plans to produce millions of cards in anticipation of the busy summer season.
Social media has seen an earlier rise in enthusiasm as aviation fans share videos of passengers asking pilots for their trading cards during flights. For context, Delta Air Lines has been doing something similar for years, especially with a special Centennial collection that impressively distributed millions of cards back in 2025.
Aviation enthusiasts often post their interactions with pilots about these trading cards on TikTok, showcasing a trend that seems to bring a touch of joy during flights. Earlier this year, American Airlines also introduced a retro-inspired in-flight menu, featuring classic meals like beef Wellington and shrimp cocktail, which certainly adds to that nostalgic vibe.
