American Airlines plane makes urgent landing at Newark Airport

Emergency Landing of American Airlines Flight

An American Airlines plane had to make an unplanned landing at Newark Liberty International Airport due to a flat front tire.

American Airlines Flight 1461 experienced a “nose landing gear failure” and made this emergency landing around 8:44 PM on Wednesday. A Port Authority spokesperson confirmed the details to the Post.

The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, took off from Charlotte Douglas International Airport in North Carolina just before 7 PM and arrived at its destination on schedule, according to data from FlightAware.

No injuries occurred because of the incident. After landing, the plane was towed to the gate.

This emergency landing happened just a few days after an Air Canada plane collided with a fire truck that had crossed the runway at LaGuardia Airport on Sunday night. Sadly, that accident resulted in the deaths of two pilots and sent numerous others to the hospital.

The aftermath of that disaster led to the temporary closure of LaGuardia Airport on Monday, leaving many travelers stranded.

The Air Canada Bombardier CRJ-900 jet was reportedly responding to an unrelated emergency when it crashed into the truck while landing from Montreal, with 72 passengers and four crew members aboard. The pilot and co-pilot lost their lives instantly as the cockpit and front fuselage were demolished upon impact.

Across the country, travelers are facing long TSA lines at various airports, including Newark, due to staff shortages from the ongoing government shutdown affecting Homeland Security funding.

A warning on Newark’s website cautioned travelers that security wait times could be significantly longer than usual, as these times may change based on passenger volume and TSA staffing availability.

Recently, operations at Newark were also disrupted when smoke infiltrated the control tower, leading to a ground stop. Following a detected burning odor, the Federal Aviation Administration relocated air traffic controllers to a back-up facility, temporarily halting arrivals and departures at the airport.
