American Express to Build New Skyscraper at World Trade Center II

American Express has unveiled plans for a new 55-story building at World Trade Center II in New York City. The company anticipates that construction will wrap up by 2031, with work set to commence this spring.

This new structure will encompass nearly 2 million square feet and is designed to accommodate approximately 10,000 employees, featuring modern workspaces that promote collaboration and creativity. It will also include several terraces and gardens, plus over an acre of outdoor space, offering stunning views of the Manhattan skyline, as stated by the company.

The company will be the sole owner and inhabitant of the building. They emphasized the importance of this project alongside comments from New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani and New York Governor Kathy Hochul, both of whom highlighted the role of trade unions.

Mamdani remarked that the completion of the final commercial tower at the World Trade Center signifies not just an investment but also the importance of unions and the dignity of work. He mentioned that this project would generate thousands of union jobs that support families and fortify communities. “When we invest in New York, it’s vital that this investment benefits the workers who physically build our city—like carpenters and electricians,” he added in his statement.

Governor Hochul echoed these sentiments, stating that the new skyscraper will enhance Lower Manhattan, creating numerous high-wage union jobs and providing significant economic advantages to New Yorkers. She expressed gratitude to American Express for their renewed commitment to the city and acknowledged the efforts of the Port Authority in facilitating this project.
