Amex Announces Major Updates for Platinum Cards
American Express is gearing up to enhance its travel-oriented platinum credit cards later this year, promoting what it refers to as “the biggest investment ever” in its card renewal initiatives. This significant update is expected to impact both the US Consumer and Business Platinum Cards.
“Over 40 years ago, we introduced Platinum Cards. We continue to offer Platinum Cards with the global services, unique benefits, and experiences that our card members love,” a company spokesperson mentioned. They also highlighted that these enhancements resonate particularly with millennials and Gen Z, who represent a considerable portion—about 35%—of consumer spending recently. “We’re taking these cards to a new level, expanding beyond travel to meet the evolving needs of our customers,” they added.
Many New Perks on the Horizon
American Express touts itself as having more airport lounge options than any other issuer, boasting access to over 1,550 lounges across more than 500 airports globally. In the coming year, they plan to open three new Centurion Lounges in Newark, New Jersey, Salt Lake City, Utah, and Tokyo, Japan, bringing the total number of Centurion Lounges to 32.
Amex CEO Steve Squeri aims to attract a wealthier younger audience and recently shared plans for a significant upgrade to the platinum card set to roll out this summer or early fall. This is part of a broader strategy to appeal to affluent millennials and Gen Z.
The company is making what it claims is the largest investment in its card offerings to date. “We see two primary areas of investment,” explained Howard Grosfield, the group’s president of U.S. Consumer Services. “We’re doubling down on what our card members love, while also adding exciting new brands.”
In July 2021, Amex raised the annual fee for the Platinum Card to $695. Since then, they’ve faced notable competition from other premium cards, including JPMorgan Chase’s Sapphire Reserve Card and Capital One’s Venture X Rewards Card, yet specific details on the forthcoming changes have not been disclosed.
Analyst Ben Elliott from Bloomberg Intelligence noted consumer interest in annual fees and reward structures has remained strong over the years.
Additionally, the renewal of business platinum cards aims to enhance card member benefits, supporting the company’s growth. Business Platinum Card holders enjoy flexible spending limits tailored to their financial dynamics, in addition to various travel and business-related perks.
A standout feature of the Platinum Card is access to American Express’s Global Lounge Network. Amex recently announced a Centurion Lounge is planned for Haneda Airport in Tokyo, in addition to the new lounges also confirmed for Salt Lake City and Newark.
