Caleb Flynn, a former contestant on “American Idol” and a church pastor, broke down in tears as a jury found him guilty of the brutal murder of his wife, Ashley, who was shot while sleeping in their home. This verdict, delivered by an Ohio jury on Tuesday, revealed that Flynn had orchestrated a false burglary to mask his actions, all in the name of pursuing a future with his younger mistress.
The 40-year-old Flynn, a father of two preteen daughters, staged the crime at their Tipp City residence, fatally shooting Ashley on February 16. After deliberating for two and a half hours, the jury concluded he was guilty on all 11 counts, which included aggravated murder and tampering with evidence. This could result in a life sentence without parole.
As the judge read the verdicts, Flynn struggled to maintain his composure, tears streaming down his face.
During closing arguments, Ohio Prosecutor Paul Watkins emphasized the choice Flynn made, highlighting the devastating consequence for his wife.
The prosecution argued that Flynn fabricated the crime scene to make it appear as though an intruder had shot his wife while he and their daughters were asleep. Ashley was killed with a 9mm handgun, although the actual weapon was never found. Interestingly, Flynn’s own 9mm was missing from his truck, where it was usually kept.
Prosecutors pointed out that Flynn had been in an affair with Alleigha Botner, a 24-year-old he met when she was an intern at his church in 2022. They presented evidence including over 100,000 text messages between the two, where Flynn expressed thoughts about wanting to kill his wife and his plans to carry it out. In fact, just hours before the murder, he texted Botner, saying, “I choose you. I’m free. Actions will come tomorrow.”
Flynn’s defense team countered that while Flynn was indeed unfaithful and had issues with his wife, those alone couldn’t mean he was a murderer. Their argument rested on the prosecution’s lack of direct evidence, forensic links, or eyewitness accounts to firmly establish that Flynn committed the act.
Flynn, who once voiced his deep love for his wife during his “American Idol” appearance in 2013, is due for sentencing on October 5.
