Russell’s finish looked similar to Lyles’ victory in the 100 meters earlier this week, when Lyles beat Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson by just half a second.
The field was packed with strong competitors, including defending Olympic champion Camacho-Quinn and Jamaica’s Danielle Williams, who won last year’s world championships in Budapest.

“I guess I’m not really thinking about (setting a top time) because I know I still have some strength left,” Russell told The Associated Press before the race. “If I start thinking I have to do more than I’ve done before, I feel like something bad could happen. … If I’m destined to win the gold medal, then I will.”
This is Russell’s first Olympic medal and his first gold medal.
