Officials from the Trump administration announced that the American missionary was freed on Sunday following 13 months of imprisonment in Tunisia, as reported by Reuters.
US Special Envoy Adam Berler confirmed that Robert Vieira’s liberation was achieved on Sunday, according to Reuters.
Vieira was detained while performing missionary work in Tunisia 13 months ago, with Tunisian authorities suspecting him of being involved in espionage, as stated by Bohler.
“We appreciate the Tunisian government’s choice to settle this matter and facilitate Vieira’s reunion with his family after over 13 months of pre-trial detention,” Bohler expressed, according to Reuters.
The State Department also reported the release of American airline mechanics who had been in Taliban custody since 2022, announced later last month.
“George Grezman is now free. He was wrongly detained in Afghanistan for two and a half years and is currently returning home with his wife, Alexandra,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio shared on Social Platform X.
In January, six Americans held as hostages in Venezuela were freed following a visit to the nation by Richard Grenell, the envoy for President Trump’s special mission.
“We were notified that we were bringing six hostages back from Venezuela. I want to thank Rick Grenell and my entire staff. Outstanding work!” Trump wrote in a January Truth Social Post.
