American Missionary Pilot Abducted in Niger as Organizations Urge for Prayer

Kidnapping of American Missionary Pilot in Niger

Christian Services is calling for prayers following the kidnapping of an American missionary pilot in Niamey, Niger’s capital, very close to the presidential palace—just about 100 meters away. Reports indicate that Kevin Rideout was taken earlier this week by three individuals in a Toyota Corolla.

It’s believed that these armed men may have associations with the Islamic State. Rideout has worked in various ministries, notably with Mission International (SIM). Consilium, a ministry focused on the safety of missionaries and persecuted Christians, has urged believers globally to pray for his well-being.

“Brothers and sisters, please continue to pray for Kevin Rideout,” said Scott Browner, President of Consilium. “He has faithfully served Christ in Niger and is now encountering significant dangers. Please ask the Lord to protect him, bolster his faith, and grant him peace that transcends understanding. Remember to pray for his family and colleagues, as well as for those striving for his release.”

He also encouraged prayer for Kevin’s courage to inspire the church towards deeper faith, underscoring that following Christ can come with risks and that God’s care extends to any situation. “May his unwavering testimony motivate us to live wherever God leads us,” he added.

Niger’s security situation has become more precarious over the years, with extremist groups increasingly targeting foreigners, aid workers, and Christians. Open Doors ranks Niger as the 28th most dangerous country for Christians globally. Their latest report emphasizes that the rise of Islamic extremist groups has resulted in frequent attacks and kidnappings that severely limit the freedoms and safety of Christians.

A spokesperson from the U.S. State Department confirmed awareness of the kidnapping. “Embassy staff are in touch with local authorities regarding this situation,” they stated.

“Ensuring the safety of all Americans is a top priority, and we are committed to a collaborative effort across the U.S. government to support the safe recovery of this citizen,” the statement concluded.

This incident highlights ongoing challenges in the region, reminding many of the precarious situations faced by those serving in areas of conflict.
