Chloe Kim Faces Controversy at 2026 Winter Olympics
Chloe Kim, the American snowboarder and two-time gold medalist, has become a focal point of attention at the upcoming Winter Olympics in Italy.
During a recent press event, she encountered a question that stirred a strong reaction. A reporter inquired, “What does it mean to represent Team USA during such times?” This question, while open-ended, has led to quite a bit of debate.
Kim responded thoughtfully, noting her immigrant background. “My parents are immigrants, so this really resonates with me,” she said. “In moments like these, it’s crucial for us to unite and support one another, especially with everything happening around us.”
Her response, while sincere, may not placate everyone. “I’m incredibly proud to represent the United States. My family and I have benefitted from many opportunities here,” Kim continued. “We should also be able to voice our opinions on current issues. Leading with love and compassion is essential, and I’d like to see more of that.”
The question seemed to be specifically crafted to provoke political tension. The reporter recalled a statement made by former President Trump, who had criticized Kim’s teammate Hunter Hess, labeling him a “real loser.” Hess, a fellow American freestyle skier, had expressed his mixed feelings about his role on the national team, prompting Trump to assert that Hess should not have been representing the country.
Later, Hess clarified on social media that he holds a deep love for America, suggesting that “But it can always be better.”
Kim, originally from Torrance, California, is focused on defending her Olympic title in the women’s snowboard halfpipe, having clinched gold in both the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics and the 2022 Beijing Games.
Recent reports indicate that Kim has qualified for the upcoming final, securing the top position ahead of Japan’s Sara Shimizu and teammate Maddie Mastro.
The finals are scheduled for Thursday, February 12th, at 1:30 PM ET.
