Americans Desire Greater Trust in Movies and TV, Recent Survey Reveals

A recent survey reveals that a significant majority of Americans desire more movies and TV shows centered around faith. Interestingly, even those who identify as atheists or agnostics indicated that such themes could enhance the appeal of these titles.

The Faith and Media Initiative/HarrisX survey found that 92 percent of entertainment consumers in the U.S. believe faith should have a place in mainstream entertainment. Nearly a quarter (23 percent) feel that faith-related themes should be the central focus, while about half (51 percent) think they should be included but not dominate the narrative.

Moreover, over three-quarters (77%) of respondents—including 59% of atheists and agnostics—expressed that storylines centered on faith or spirituality are broadly appealing.

The Faith and Media Initiative aims to enhance the representation of faith and spirituality in Hollywood. Brooke Zaug, the executive director, mentioned during a webcast about the survey that there is a considerable audience out there that seeks better, more accurate portrayals of faith.

Zaug also shared an interaction with a Netflix representative, highlighting that their faith-themed film, which was nominated for an Oscar, attracted a much broader audience due to its faith elements.

While studios and filmmakers are open to weaving more faith into their projects, Zaug pointed out that they often need guidance. Research can provide that valuable insight.

The study didn’t just gather opinions; it presented respondents with specific scenes from titles like Young Sheldon and No One Wants This to analyze their reactions. Results showed that exposure to faith-oriented scenes positively influenced viewers. Initially, 53% of participants considered faith-centric shows appealing, but this rose to 58% after viewing the scenes, with even higher numbers among atheists and agnostics. Similarly, the perceived relevance of faith-themed titles increased from 53% before viewing to 61% afterward, again with notable growth among atheists and agnostics.

The survey included responses from 12,000 U.S. adults who watch movies and TV shows weekly.
