Staten Island, New York – More than 1 million Americans who have never filed a 2021 return have only another month to claim a potential refund of over $700.
Earlier this month, the Internal Revenue Service reminded the approximately 1.1 million Americans who did not file returns for the 2021 tax year that only returns through Tuesday, April 15th could potentially receive a refund from a pool of over $1 billion in unclaimed refunds.
“Under law, taxpayers usually have three years to file and request tax refunds. If they don't file within three years, the money will become the property of the US Treasury.” According to the IRS.
Nationally, an estimated 1.1 million residents did not file a 2021 return, leaving more than $1 billion in refunds remaining claimed, with a median amount of $781.
In New York, an estimated 73,000 residents were unable to file a 2021 return and have not been claimed a refund of more than $72 million.
The median potential refunds for Empire State residents is $995, more than $200 above the national median potential refunds of $781.
Residents must submit a return within three years of due date to receive a refund without penalty. This means that any 2021 returns scheduled for 2022 must be submitted in 2025 to issue a refund.
According to the IRS, you will need to file your tax returns from 2022 and 2023 to receive a potential refund.
