American Express Upgrades US Platinum Card

American Express has revealed an eagerly anticipated enhancement to its US Platinum Card. On Thursday, the company announced new benefits amounting to over $3,500 annually, while also increasing the annual fee by $200.

This adjustment is part of a broader strategy that Amex has long relied on. The credit card company routinely introduces premium perks to help justify rising fees, leveraging the quality of its customer base for banks.

The timing is interesting, as financial giants like Citigroup are aiming to break into the luxury credit card market. Yet, Amex executives expressed confidence in July that their established foothold can help them outpace competitors.

According to broker William Blair, the recent refresh is expected to positively impact financial outcomes in the long run.

Among the new features of the Platinum Card are incentives for dining experiences through Resy, purchases from Lululemon, an Uber One membership, and enhanced hotel and entertainment benefits.

Howard Grosfield, Amex’s group president, commented in an interview, “We provide customers with over $3,500 worth of access, which is quite beyond the annual fees.” It feels like a fair trade-off, especially with the new offerings.

Analysts highlight that younger generations, who represent a significant portion of Amex’s clientele, perceive credit card fees as subscription-like expenses, delivering value through travel, dining, and entertainment experiences. It’s a shift in perspective, really.

The cardholders can also earn up to $3,600 in new credits for purchases at Dell and Adobe, in addition to $600 in hotel credits, plus more statement credits for higher spending, according to Amex.

Raymond Joabar, the group president of Global Commercial Services, noted, “There’s a robust demand for travel-related perks such as hotel upgrades, late check-outs, and airport lounge access.” Those little luxuries seem to make a difference.

With the new structure, the Platinum Card will now cost $895 annually, up from its previous price of $695. Whether that increase is justifiable will ultimately depend on how much value customers see in the added benefits.
