Tragic Explosion Claims Amish Family in Pennsylvania
On Sunday morning, a devastating explosion in Lamar Township, Pennsylvania, resulted in the deaths of an Amish mother and her six children. The incident occurred around 8:30 a.m., creating a fire so fierce that firefighters couldn’t enter the house to attempt a rescue.
While authorities suspect a propane leak within the home may have caused the explosion, a thorough investigation is still ongoing.
The victims have been identified as 34-year-old Sarah Stoltzfus and her children, four sons and two daughters, who were between the ages of 3 and 11. Tragically, all seven were found inside and were declared dead at the scene. Notably, David F. Stoltzfus, the husband and father, was not at home at the time. The family had only recently moved into the residence a few months ago, integrating into the local Old Order Amish community.
Christina Duck, a neighbor, described the intensity of the explosion, saying she felt the impact while inside her house.
“I heard a boom, I could feel it, and when I looked out, I could see flames through the windows,” Duck recounted. “I ran outside, and within a minute, the whole house was completely engulfed.” She mentioned that the family had just moved in and that she often saw the children playing outside.
Investigators from the Pennsylvania State Police and the Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit in Montoursville are currently looking into the incident. The lead investigator, Trooper Stephen Schramm, is treating the matter as both a fire origin case and a death investigation.
Pennsylvania State Police have specified that while the propane leak inside the house is under scrutiny, the exterior propane tanks were intact and did not play a role in the explosion.
