Ohio Gubernatorial Race Heats Up

Amy Acton, a Democratic candidate for governor in Ohio, has characterized her state as “ground zero” in the upcoming national political battle, as seen in a video that has gained traction online.

In the footage shared this week, Acton referenced her strong performance in the primaries and her connections to Youngstown while energizing her supporters, emphasizing that the election could significantly influence the nation’s future.

Acton presented Ohio as a critical battleground state, highlighting her unopposed run in the May primary, where she secured more votes than any other gubernatorial candidate—Democrat or Republican—in history.

“This is it. We are ground zero,” Acton asserted. “In the primary, I had no opponent. We received more votes for governor than any candidate from either party ever has. And we won Youngstown.”

The former health director plans to campaign throughout the Mahoning Valley, positioning herself as the candidate who could challenge the long-standing Republican dominance in the governor’s office.

“I want you guys to know that, honestly, for the past two and a half years, every time I speak, I see people in the room getting emotional,” Acton expressed. “We’re about to elect Ohio’s first woman governor. And I just want you to keep that in mind as we approach the final 30 days.”

The race has remained tight throughout the year. Recent averages from RealClearPolling indicated that Acton held a narrow lead of about a third of a point over Republican nominee Vivek Ramaswamy, highlighting the statistical nature of the contest, with nine independent polls since February showing both candidates close to each other.

This comes after a tense incident where an armed individual was arrested at the Canfield Fair for pushing through a crowd towards Acton, resulting in two people being knocked down; fortunately, Acton was unharmed.

The campaign has intensified in its final stretch, with Acton choosing not to debate Ramaswamy. Her campaign has labeled him a “scam artist” spreading falsehoods and accused him of manipulating AI to misrepresent her record.

Meanwhile, Republican Governor Mike DeWine is unable to run for a third consecutive term due to term limits. It’s been quite a while—since 2006, to be exact—since a Democrat last won a gubernatorial race in Ohio. Election Day is set for November 3.
