Confrontation During Acton’s Campaign Event
A recent campaign event for Amy Acton, the former health director of Ohio and now a candidate for governor, turned tense when a Republican activist with a camera confronted her last Saturday in Harrison, Ohio.
The cameraman asked Acton why she has been avoiding debates with her Republican challenger, Vivek Ramaswamy. In response, her team quickly intervened to shield Acton from the questioning.
Footage from the incident shows Acton walking away while her staff reiterated their demand for “no photos, no videos,” as they blocked the cinematographer. This has fueled criticisms that Acton hasn’t provided a satisfactory explanation for her reluctance to debate as the campaigns reach a critical phase.
Earlier this month, after Ramaswamy accepted a CNN debate invitation, Acton’s campaign publicly stated she would not participate. A spokesperson remarked that Acton is more focused on engaging with Ohio voters rather than dealing with what they describe as a “scam artist” spreading falsehoods about her and her family.
During the interaction, Acton’s staff appeared to bump into the cameraman, at which point he requested they “be careful.” Acton did not answer the questions he posed.
Ramaswamy has criticized Acton, pointing to her decision not to debate as a sign of her unfitness to lead, despite the fact that he himself has not pressed her on a debate stage. He posted on social media expressing disappointment that Acton would not take voter questions or engage in a debate, highlighting various issues from her past.
Acton’s campaign has yet to comment on the recent event. Following her successful primary, she is set to compete against Ramaswamy in the general election scheduled for November 3.
