An unexpected celebration of 'Zohran Mamdani sports summer' follows the New York Knicks' NBA Finals victory.

New York City Knicks celebration thrown into chaos by multiple arrests and bus fire

A spontaneous celebration in New York City for the Knicks’ NBA championship win quickly spiraled into chaos. Reports indicated several arrests, a stabbing incident, and five school buses being set ablaze. To manage the escalating unrest following their historic victory, the New York Police Department had to don riot gear and deploy police horses.

On Saturday night, the New York Knicks triumphed over the San Antonio Spurs with a score of 94-90, claiming their first NBA championship since 1973.

Interestingly, just weeks earlier, Arsenal, an English Premier League soccer team, also celebrated a league victory, marking their first since the 2003-2004 season.

Both teams are home to standout players. Jalen Brunson, OG Anunoby, and Karl-Anthony Towns excelled for the Knicks, particularly in playoff matches. Arsenal’s roster includes talents like Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice, Martin Odegaard, and goalkeeper David Raya.

One could argue that such achievements should rightfully be credited to the players, coaches, and staff involved. Yet, many within the left-leaning sports media seem to lack the awareness necessary for this kind of acknowledgment.

The Knicks defeated the Spurs in Game 5, marking a significant end to a 53-year championship drought.

In a surprising turn of events, the New York Times published an article celebrating both teams under the banner of “Zoran Mamdani Sports Summer.” It seems that New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani is a fan of both teams and is claiming this period as his own celebration of sports.

But really, what relevance does Mamdani have here? For instance, if the Yankees won the World Series this fall, could you imagine a post about “Donald Trump Sports Year”? After all, Trump was a Knicks fan long before Mamdani’s time in New York.

In fact, the Knicks issued a cease-and-desist order to Mamdani over improper use of their logo, clarifying they do not endorse him.

Compounding the oddity, Mamdani is known for being an Arsenal supporter, even though he has never lived in England. His affection for the team appears to stem from their early 2000s recruitment of African players, although it’s not like he stated it clearly.

He once remarked, “I became a fan in the early 2000s, though it was my uncle who got me into it. I was born in Kampala, Uganda, where my family has roots.”

This unusual ‘celebration’ seems even more peculiar considering Arsenal lost to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final. There’s also the fact that after Mamdani snapped a photo with the Mets mascot, the Mets went on to lose twelve games consecutively, a streak perhaps symbolized by his unusual painted smile.

But coming back to the main issue, do left-leaning outlets like The Athletic extend similar congratulations to Republican politicians?

Arsenal’s owner, Stan Kroenke, donates to both political parties—albeit more so to Republicans, including a $1 million donation to Trump’s inaugural committee. Contrarily, he embodies the billionaire class that Mamdani criticizes. Knicks owner Jim Dolan has also expressed admiration for Trump, underscoring the complexities of sports, politics, and financial power.

And still, Mamdani reaps praise for Arsenal’s recent success, despite the funding that enabled such victories hailing from the billionaires he often chastises. It’s hard to overlook the irony, particularly when considering that the same outlet labeled an article “Donald Trump and James Dolan attempted to ruin the NBA Finals atmosphere,” despite the Knicks’ prior comeback that very game.

Ultimately, it seems Mamdani has sidestepped any responsibility for the Knicks’ challenges. This echoes a previous commentary where a left-wing writer blamed the Knicks’ struggles on the ‘atmosphere,’ which, amusingly enough, didn’t apply when they won. Such is the landscape of left-leaning sports media.
