Ancient Copper Workshop Discovered in Sinai, Egypt
Recently, archaeologists uncovered an ancient copper workshop in Egypt’s Sinai region, a land often associated with the biblical figure Moses and the Book of Exodus.
On September 14, Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Ancients shared details about this find, located at Wadi Al Nasbusite in South Sinai.
Interestingly, Wadi Al Nasb is historically significant, as it’s linked to Serabit El-Khadim, a site where researchers recently claimed to have found the earliest written mention of Moses. Once, this area served as a significant turquoise mining site during the Bronze Age.
Insights into the Workshop
The Egyptian authorities highlighted that the copper smelting workshop of Wadi Al Nasb was accompanied by several administrative structures and checkpoints.
Inside the workshop, there were copper smelting furnaces, tools for ore preparation, and various ceramic items, including crucibles, amphoras, and even models of Egyptian ships.
In addition, the team discovered ingots, charcoal made from local wood, and refined clay for making furnace nozzles, called chuyere.
The Role of Copper in Ancient Times
Copper was essential in the creation of weapons, tools, currency, and everyday items. It’s notable that the Sinai region held strategic importance due to its rich deposits of copper and turquoise.
According to officials, these findings provide substantial proof of advanced industrial systems for copper smelting and casting, prior to the transportation of metals to the Nile Valley for various uses, including military and administrative purposes.
They added that this discovery opens new opportunities for cultural tourism in areas filled with historical secrets.
This marks a new chapter in understanding Egypt’s industrial and metallurgical history, emphasizing how these past practices align with sustainable development.
Interestingly, Egypt’s tourism sector is increasingly promoting biblical archaeological discoveries, perhaps to attract more visitors. Just at the start of September, plans were announced for a mega resort near Mount Sinai, the traditional site where Moses received the Ten Commandments.
