Anders Carlson’s lone kicking miscue dooms Jets in OT loss

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Jets kicker Anders Karlsson had just made the Jets' biggest kick of the season with a 42-yard field goal with 52 seconds left in the game to give them a 26-23 lead.

Then he made his biggest mistake.

Carlson missed the ensuing kickoff, and instead of kicking into the end zone for a touchback, his kick landed at the 1 and was returned 45 yards to the Dolphins 46 by Malik Washington.

Six plays later, Jason Sanders made a 52-yard field goal to tie the game and send the game into overtime, where the Dolphins won 32-26.

“He missed it,” Jets interim coach Jeff Ulbrich said. “We have to kick it out of the end zone. We just missed the kick. So we went into the play, but at the end of the day, we had to cover what was kicked, but we didn't do it well enough.” could not be covered.”

Carlson had four touchbacks in the game, but this one failed.

“The request was to put it out there, but I got too aggressive with it,” Carlson said.

Karlsson, the Jets' fourth kicker this season, tried to tackle Washington but was run over.

“I'm honestly pretty frustrated because that was a big play,” Karlsson said. “Once the ball went inbounds, I just did my job and tried to push him inside. Obviously, the low guy wins there. I learned that. On the kick. After that, I thought I did what I could to slow him down a little bit.”

WR Davante Adams had a big game, but made a mistake in the fourth quarter when he went wide with 56 seconds left before Carlson's game-winning field goal.

This put the Dolphins on the back foot and gave them additional time to tie the game.

Asked if Adams wanted to stay inbound, Ulbrich said, “Of course.” “We just came out on the field and told everyone we were officially in four-minute mode, stay inbounds and burn the clock as much as possible. And they did a good job of pushing him out.”

Moses took a painkiller injection and tried to play, but lasted only the first half and was replaced by Max Mitchell. Moses said he didn't even know what happened.

He was doing block training when he felt something.

“My hand went numb and I looked down. It was like it was just bulging,” Moses said. “I put my shot up and tried to go.”

Moses said he plans to undergo tests on Monday to see if he suffered a fracture. This is the Jets' third injury this season during pregame warmups.

Michael Carter II and CJ Mosley were injured before games this season as well.

Special teams ace Irv Charles left the game with a knee injury. Ulbrich said she didn't know how serious it was, but she looked like she was in a lot of pain. … CB Sauce Gardner is out of action with a hamstring injury. With Allen Lazard back in action, WR Malachi Coley was inactive.
