Andrei Vasilevskiy Wins Vezina Trophy Amidst Light-Hearted Pranks

Tampa Bay Lightning’s goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy has been performing exceptionally well, earning himself a spot as a potential finalist for the Vezina Trophy, awarded to the NHL’s top goalie. Despite his accolades, Vasilevskiy has recently found himself the target of playful jokes.

The Lightning decided to have a bit of fun when presenting him with his second Vezina Trophy. It was a lighthearted prank that seemed straight out of a reality prank show. Remember “Punk’d”? Well, this kind of humor definitely fits the vibe.

The NHL has shifted gears in recent years, opting to announce award winners ahead of the formal ceremony, presumably to build excitement and create engaging content for social media. So, in celebrating Vasilevskiy, who triumphed over Boston’s Jeremy Swayman and the Islanders’ Ilya Sorokin, teams got a little creative.

Instead of a typical presentation, they decided to give him a scare, claiming there was something suspicious in his car. Honestly, you could also just give him a nice gift card, but where’s the fun in that?

There’s something amusing about worrying a goalie, making him feel like his car might blow up right as he’s about to receive the trophy—only to later congratulate him. My favorite moment? When Vasilevskiy seemed genuinely relieved that he wouldn’t have to deal with insurance paperwork. Can’t say I blame him; I’d feel the same way too.

And what a year it has been for Vasilevskiy! He even had an outdoor feud with fellow finalist Jeremy Swayman—can any other Vezina winner say they’ve had that experience?

But where do we take this humour from here? Perhaps something wilder like “Scare Tactics” would be next, where he thinks he’s been abducted by aliens or that Bigfoot is tearing up his mailbox. Imagine if, during an actual police situation, he turned to the team and asked, “So, what’s the punchline here?”
