WNBA Trade: Angel Reese Moves to Atlanta Dream

On April 6, the Chicago Sky of the WNBA announced a trade involving power forward Angel Reese, sending her to the Atlanta Dream in exchange for two first-round draft picks.

The team’s statement on the move cited a need for “roster balance,” but it seems there might be more to the story.

Blaze TV Host Jason Whitlock, for instance, isn’t convinced that this trade was purely tactical. In a recent episode of his show, he suggested there were underlying issues that prompted Reese’s departure after just two seasons with the Sky.

Whitlock expressed his surprise, stating, “I find it strange that the Chicago Sky would dump her after only two years. I think it speaks to what a headache she was in Chicago.” He then shared that there were concerns about her relationship with teammates and her commitment to team goals.

“Teammates didn’t want to play with her,” he noted, adding that coaches struggled to manage her. According to Whitlock, while the team aimed to compete, Reese seemed focused on her own statistics rather than the overall team effort.

When asked if Reese would change her style of play or approach, panelist Steve Kim didn’t hold back: “No, no, no, no.” He went on to advise her new teammates to expect minimal ball-sharing, indicating that Reese would likely stay focused on individual stats, particularly rebounds.

Scapinac chimed in, highlighting Reese’s struggle with layups. “She barely—barely—makes layups,” he said, pointing to a consistent issue in her game. Whitlock further elaborated on Reese’s history, mentioning locker room conflicts with previous teams, indicating a pattern that could be concerning.

However, Whitlock also suggested a silver lining. He believes that joining a potential championship-contending team like the Atlanta Dream could provide Reese with a fresh start. “If she can win a WNBA championship before Caitlin Clark, it will really elevate her brand and her standing within the league,” he said. “This opportunity might push her to improve her game.”
