Caitlin Clark Voices Frustration During Loss
Caitlin Clark was clearly not thrilled after Wednesday night’s game. The Fever faced a tough 88-75 defeat against the Valkyries in Indianapolis, and things took a turn when Clark reacted passionately to a call—or lack thereof—from the referee.
In the second quarter, as Clark drove to the basket for a layup, she was knocked to the ground by Valkyries center Kia Stokes, but no foul was called. Understandably, this left Clark enraged, and she was seen yelling at referee Gerda Gatling.
After successfully making a layup but falling down, Clark limped off the court, showing signs of pain. Meanwhile, the referee issued a controversial foul against Fever Center Aliyah Boston, adding fuel to the fire.
Clark then stepped off for a medical evaluation and returned only in the second half, with the Fever trailing by 13 points at that point. Despite her efforts, she ended the game with 13 points, shooting a disappointing 4 of 14 from the field, along with four turnovers.
In her post-game remarks, Clark disclosed that she had suffered a “brain contusion” from the incident during the game. She expressed disbelief, stating, “There’s no way the referee could have missed that. And then you have to play the rest of the game with a bruised leg. That’s ridiculous.”
This is not the first time this season that Clark has shown her dissatisfaction with officiating. Back on June 22, she received a technical foul for clapping after being called for a personal foul, an action she still questioned. “If I’m going to get a technical for clapping, I should pick a match where I’m going to be suspended,” she argued, “I just don’t understand it.”
Additionally, a recent incident where Mercury player Alyssa Thomas struck Clark in the throat while scrambling for a loose ball has kept the chatter alive. Although no foul was called during the game, Thomas was later penalized with a two-game suspension following a review. This led to speculation that NBA Commissioner Adam Silver had requested her suspension to WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert, a claim the league has since denied.
Following their loss to the Valkyries, the Fever hold the sixth position in the league standings, with a record of 14 wins and 10 losses. It’s been quite a season for Clark, who averages 20.1 points per game, with shooting percentages of 42.7 from the field and 33.1 from beyond the arc.
