Soccer referee passes away weeks after being let go from the World Cup due to sexual assault claims

Tragic Death of Aspiring World Cup Referee

Rob Diepelink, a Dutch referee aged 38, has passed away two months after being suspended from the World Cup over sexual assault allegations.

His removal in May followed an arrest by the London Metropolitan Police. Diepelink was set to serve as a VAR official but faced accusations of sexually assaulting an underage boy. The case, however, was dismissed due to a lack of sufficient evidence.

The Dutch Football Association expressed its shock and sadness over Diepelink’s death, describing the loss as significant for the refereeing community. They praised him as not only a referee with international experience but also as a dedicated colleague.

“Our thoughts are with his family and friends,” they added, offering strength and support during this difficult time.

In the wake of his exclusion from the World Cup, Diepelink shared feelings of injustice. He expressed disappointment about missing the opportunity and stated he felt he was “unfairly accused.” He claimed to have fully cooperated with the police and disclosed all relevant information to FIFA, UEFA, and the KNVB, the Dutch football federation.

Diepelink started his refereeing career in 2012 and was arrested following an incident during a Conference League match between Crystal Palace and Fiorentina.

A spokesperson from the Metropolitan Police indicated that Diepelink’s arrest stemmed from an event in Croydon, south London, but later clarified that the evidence could not be accepted for legal action.

Remarkably, he was active just last weekend, officiating a friendly match between Go Ahead Eagles and Apollon. His spot at the World Cup was eventually filled by French referee Willy Delahod.
