Violent Clashes Erupt at “No Kings” Protest in Los Angeles

Over the weekend, a significant disturbance occurred outside the federal complex in downtown Los Angeles as protests labeled “No Kings” intensified across Southern California and other parts of the nation.

A group of around 200 protesters approached the area, instigating confrontations with law enforcement by aggressively shaking metal gates meant to protect the facility and hurling insults at the officers present.

Among the shouts, one protester demanded, “Come and get me!” Many participants, wearing masks and advocating for various causes—including anti-ICE, anti-war, and pro-Palestinian issues—used megaphones to incite the police further.

City Hall witnessed significant chaos, prompting a response from both LAPD and federal agents. At one point, officers on horseback were brought in to manage the crowd. Initially, authorities warned demonstrators after they launched pink smoke bombs and tossed pieces of wood and water over barriers. Following a second warning, police resorted to using tear gas and began making arrests.

In a concerning moment, a woman shared with a reporter that her son was detained, urging others in the area to leave.

By 5 p.m., a citywide tactical alert was issued by the Los Angeles Police Department due to disturbances near the Federal Metropolitan Detention Center.

According to L.A.’s federal prosecutor, Bill Essairi, some investigators at the scene faced aggression. He cautioned on social media, stating that, “federal agents have started arresting individuals who assaulted police officers at a Los Angeles courthouse.”

Earlier on the same day, crowds gathered for the “No Kings” protests, considered by organizers to be among the largest in U.S. history, with millions participating nationwide.

Many demonstrators voiced opposition to issues ranging from ICE enforcement to the military actions in Iran. A circulated flyer depicted the Trump administration as a “regime” and called for the president’s impeachment.

One major organization behind the protests, the Liberty Hill Foundation, focuses on social justice and has considerable funding for housing assistance programs, an apparent point of contention for some residents footing the bill for ongoing protests.

Adding to the day’s events, Doug Emhoff, husband of Vice President Kamala Harris, made an appearance at a gathering in Malibu, where he interacted with various celebrities. In a somewhat contrasting scene, comedian Kathy Griffin, known for her controversial mock depiction of Trump, was seen alongside Emhoff.

Emhoff addressed attendees at one of the 41 rallies across Southern California aimed at opposing Trump’s policies. Notably, actor Sam Elliott participated in the Malibu event, wearing a shirt that proclaimed “Vote for the motherfucker.”
