Anguilla Named Safest Destination in the Caribbean
If you’re concerned about safety while planning a vacation, a small Caribbean island has just snagged the top spot for its peaceful environment, stunning beaches, and exceptional culinary offerings.
Anguilla, a British territory located just north of St. Maarten and east of the Virgin Islands, has been identified as the safest place in the Caribbean, based on the 2025 rankings from World Population Review. These rankings evaluate factors like crime rates, law enforcement, and political stability, drawing from the World Peace Index data.
The report highlights that Anguilla boasts one of the lowest crime rates in the region, with minimal occurrences of violent or petty crimes that might tarnish its image as a serene getaway. Tourists can feel relaxed and secure in this quiet destination.
While the study did mention moderate levels of drug-related crime, it clarified that such issues seldom impact visitors. Additionally, the U.S. State Department has classified Anguilla at a Level 1 travel advisory, indicating minimal risk and suggesting that travelers take standard precautions.
“Peace is not just a concept here; it’s a palpable feeling,” the Anguilla Tourism Board remarked on social media following the report’s release. “From our 33 beautiful beaches to the warmth of our community, safety is woven into life on our island.”
Coming in after Anguilla in the safety rankings were Barbados, St. Barts, Martinique, the Cayman Islands, and Aruba.
John Rose, a principal risk advisor at a global travel management firm, provided insight into Anguilla’s favorable ranking. He noted that the island’s isolation and limited access points cut down on cross-border crime, and the tourism scene is effectively managed in a boutique style.
This recognition is significant not just for boosting traveler confidence but also from an economic perspective for the tourism industry, Rose added.
It’s worth mentioning that Anguilla has received acclaim on previous occasions as well.
The island was also featured among the world’s top islands in Travel + Leisure’s 2025 World’s Best Awards, commending its welcoming hospitality, variety of cuisine, and luxury resorts.
Travel experts and bloggers often tout Anguilla as a hidden gem, ideal for those looking to escape the typical shopping districts and bustling cruise ship ports, where visitors can savor pristine waters, sandy beaches, and fresh local seafood.
As noted by Encyclopedia Britannica, the island is renowned for its laid-back atmosphere and its fantastic beaches.
Erin Schroeder, a travel advisor based in Atlanta and the founder of Major Traveler, echoed similar sentiments about Anguilla’s appeal, stating it’s one of the premier destinations in the Caribbean.
“Anguilla being recognized as the safest country in the Caribbean is a remarkable achievement,” she remarked. “Safety definitely ranks among the top factors for travelers when choosing an island.”
Besides safety, travelers also look for easy navigation, which Anguilla provides, she pointed out.
“I really enjoy being able to stroll along the beach at night to grab a bite at a local eatery or jog along the island’s flat roads without worry,” Schroeder added.
She did mention that Anguilla’s exclusivity and charm can make access challenging, given there’s only one direct flight from the United States.
“Travelers usually have to fly to St. Maarten and then take a boat, which can add to the cost. A shared ferry ride is around $115 per person each way,” she explained.
Rose also shared some practical tips for ensuring safety, recommending a “layered” approach that includes checking local advisories, consulting with hosts or advisors for current information, and employing common-sense precautions like limiting displays of wealth and using registered transportation.
“Safety is not a static entity; it’s dynamic,” he noted. “The most diligent travelers seek out reliable information before they set off, remain vigilant during their stay, and are adaptable if changes arise. That’s the way to travel wisely and confidently.”
