Senator Angus King Jr. Announces Gubernatorial Bid

Senator Angus King Jr., representing Maine as an independent, has officially declared his intention to run for governor.

“I’m Angus King. If you know my dad, you know my value,” he stated in a recent campaign video.

King’s father previously held the governor’s office from 1995 to 2003 and has been serving in the U.S. Senate since 2013.

About Senator Angus King

From the moment we met him in Skowhegan, it was clear Angus had something unique about him. He’s always been hardworking, thoughtful, engaged, caring, and committed to his work, according to details on his son Angus King III’s campaign site.

Described as a builder, King knows Maine well; he’s the kind of optimist who keeps pushing forward until the job is done. He genuinely cares about people and aims to improve the world through his efforts. It’s easy to think that his blend of cleverness, experience, and character could make him a fantastic governor for Maine.

Current Political Context

Current Governor Janet Mills, a Democrat, is in her second consecutive term, which could mean she opts not to run in 2026 due to term limits.

Main’s Constitution states that “an individual who has served two popular, elective four-year terms as governor for two consecutive years is not entitled to succeed themselves.”

Maine Secretary of State Shena Bellows announced her intention to run for governor earlier this year as a Democrat, adding more dynamics to the upcoming election.
