Anne Hathaway Opens Up About Health Struggles
Anne Hathaway faced a hidden medical issue for a decade before opting for surgery. In a recent appearance on the New York Times podcast “Pop Cast,” the 43-year-old actress shared that she was “legally blind” in one eye for most of her 30s due to early-onset cataracts.
“This might be too much information,” Hathaway admitted. “I’ve been half-blind for 10 years.”
She elaborated, saying, “My vision was so impaired that I ended up being legally blind in my left eye and eventually had surgery. I didn’t realize how severe the situation was until I started seeing clearly again.”
Hathaway noted, “I’ve calmed down since then. I didn’t know the toll it was taking on my nervous system.”
The Mayo Clinic explains that cataracts involve clouding the eye’s lens, which can lead to difficulties seeing, akin to looking through a foggy or frosted window. It can hinder activities like reading or driving at night.
Describing her new vision, Hathaway expressed that it feels like a “miracle.” She reflected, “Every day I wake up and I’m grateful because I can see myself. It’s a miracle. I often think that, a couple of generations ago, someone in my position wouldn’t have had this option. It makes me feel connected to that kind of miracle.”
Recently, Hathaway also addressed rumors about plastic surgery circulating on social media. She usually prefers to stay private but felt compelled to clarify her situation.
“We’re in a time when people feel entitled to make assumptions about others, and sometimes they’re correct, but not always,” she commented. “There’s been a lot of speculation, and I felt like I needed to share my truth. Even so, I wonder if I should have just kept enjoying what makes me happy without drawing attention to it.”
Hathaway emphasized, “These are significant medical decisions that people are guessing about. No, I didn’t make any major medical choices. I just wanted to show you that it’s two braids.”
She concluded with a light-hearted confession, “And by the way, I might consider getting a facelift someday.”
