There's no question that WNBA rookie star Caitlin Clark deserved to be unanimously named this year's league's Rookie of the Year, but one journalist voter stole that honor from her.
Like many jealous players who constantly punched, kicked, poked her in the face, and otherwise tried to harm her on the court this season, Clark suffered another assault in her rookie year. I had to. That's what a lone sports journalist had to do. A political statement by voting for Chicago Sun player Angel Reese instead of going along with 66 other voters. chose Clark won the Best Newcomer Award.
Voting for Rookie of the Year will be determined by votes from two sports journalists from each WNBA market, as well as other WNBA writers, reporters and broadcasters. The league doesn't publish a list of how each of its 67 voters voted, so unless someone speaks out, we won't know which journalists disrupted Clark's unanimous vote.
However, game statistics alone show that Clark is by far the best player in the 2024 rookie class, and Angel Reese's stats don't even come close. So the journalists' vote for Caitlin Clark was clearly a political statement. To name a few records Clark broke during her rookie season, she broke the rookie scoring record, the rookie 3-point record, and the league's single-season assists record. Clark also led the league in assists with 8.4 per game. Not only did she become the first WNBA rookie to record a triple-double, she accomplished it twice.
For the season, Clark averaged 19.2 points (7th in the league), 8.4 assists (1st in the league), and 5.7 rebounds.
Clark will receive a $5,150 payday bonus and a personalized trophy if he wins Rookie of the Year.
The 21-year-old star said she was “incredibly honored” by the award.
“I'm very honored to be named Rookie of the Year, but I would also like to thank my family, friends, teammates, Fever organization, and everyone who has supported me throughout this season. Thank you to everyone who gave.” “I’m so proud of what we’ve accomplished and so excited about what’s next,” she said. said in her statement.
