Backlash After Transgender Athlete Dominates California Championships

This past Saturday, a transgender athlete sparked controversy by clinching two out of three state titles at the California Athletics Championships, drawing criticism from Republicans who argue that California’s Democratic leaders are neglecting equity for women’s athletics.

AB Hernandez, a biological male, won the high school High Jump Championship. Following this, a last-minute ruling was implemented to address concerns from female athletes worried about competing against transgender competitors. House Republicans criticized state Democrats for not denouncing California’s defiance toward a Trump-era executive order aimed at protecting women’s sports.

Christian Martinez, a spokesman for the NRCC, asserted that California’s vulnerable Democrats are prioritizing identity politics over the needs of female athletes. “It seems they’re more focused on appeasing activist groups than on fairness in athletics,” he said. “It’s not just about ignoring logic; they are pushing female athletes aside in the process.”

Attempts to obtain comments from five California House Democrats amid mid-term election pressures were unsuccessful. Notably, Democrats such as Gray and Heard, who are among the 13 House members in districts previously won by Trump, may face increased scrutiny as the election approaches.

Multiple outreach efforts for the DCNF to confirm whether these Democrats support trans athletes participating in women’s high school sports were met with silence. President Trump had previously signed an executive order stating that schools allowing biological males to compete in girls’ sports would face cuts in federal funding. California, however, has resisted compliance, citing a 2013 law that permits transgender athletes to compete according to their gender identity.

In a move suggesting escalating tensions, U.S. Attorney General Hal Harriet Dillon warned California school districts of potential legal action if biological males continue participation in high school girls’ athletics.

Republican leaders have denounced California and other Democrat-controlled states for permitting transgender athletes to compete in women’s sports, arguing it undermines Title IX protections for females.

Democratic representatives Gray, Harder, Tran, and others previously voted against a bill aimed at banning transgender athletes from female sports. In response to the Women’s Sports Bill, Min criticized it as a “sad political stunt,” suggesting it prioritizes political agendas over the well-being of schools and students.

Trump has called out California for failing to adhere to the executive order prohibiting biological males from participating in women’s sports, making remarks about Governor Gavin Newsom. In a statement, he commented on the victories at the state finals, implying that warnings against such participation were disregarded.
