Volpe Faces Challenges Early in Game
No one is finding humor in AAA’s Anthony Volpe’s recent performance.
In his first at-bat against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday, Volpe made two unsuccessful attempts at pitches, leading his team to lose both challenges just six pitches into the game.
Interestingly, Volpe tried to challenge a 3-0 pitch, which seemed unnecessary unless it was clear the call was incorrect. However, it was confirmed as a strike, leaving Volpe still at bat instead of on first base.
The Yankees’ AAA affiliate broadcasters expressed confusion over Volpe’s choice. “It’s an unusual challenge at 3-0,” color commentator Steve Degler remarked. “You might want to keep that one in your pocket and make it 3-1.”
Things worsened for Volpe when he was replaced by George Lombard Jr. after being called out on a borderline pitch at 3-2.
The pitch, a low fastball moving away from Volpe, was deemed to have crossed the zone by the ABS system. Volpe returned to the dugout with a smile, which didn’t sit well with some observers.
“They faced the challenge in the first six pitches of the game,” Mike Zambelli noted. “He’s smiling, but I imagine the other 27 guys on the team aren’t thrilled right now.”
Volpe had started at second base on Wednesday, but his ascension back to the majors likely hinges on how he adapts to this new position, especially considering his mixed performances at shortstop.
Meanwhile, Lombard performed well both at bat and in the field during his time with the team.
Despite the rough start, Volpe ended the game going 2-for-4, including a double, in the Railriders’ 11-3 defeat. Over five games, he hit .304, with seven hits in 23 at-bats, one home run, and two RBIs.
