Anthropic Expands in Manhattan, Plans Workforce Growth

Anthropic has taken the lead in Manhattan’s Hudson Square by leasing an entire office building, signaling a broader trend of tech companies making New York a central hub for artificial intelligence.

The firm, recognized for its Claude chatbot, will use all 16 floors of the 330 Hudson St. location. Anthropic intends to ramp up its local workforce, aiming to increase from fewer than 500 employees in early 2026 to over 1,000 by year’s end.

Moving into the new space is set to begin later this summer. The building can accommodate around 1,700 desks, which is quite a considerable expansion. Interestingly, New York has already become Anthropic’s second-largest office, following its headquarters in San Francisco.

“New York stands out as a leading center for AI,” said Paul Smith, Anthropic’s chief commercial officer. “We’re thrilled to help define New York as a technology partner for financial institutions, media firms, and cultural organizations.”

He noted that doubling the team in the city would allow Anthropic to forge closer relationships with those influencing this work.

Governor Cathy Hochul expressed enthusiasm for Anthropic’s move, highlighting the city’s unique talent pool and its diverse industries. She emphasized that New York remains a top destination for business opportunities.

This expansion follows a challenging spell for Anthropic and its CEO, Dario Amodei. Recently, the company successfully relaunched its advanced Mythos and Fable AI models with approval from the Trump administration.

The White House had been focused on export-controlled models after concerns from Amazon CEO Andy Jassy and others. Anthropic engaged in time-sensitive negotiations to get its models operational again, implementing safety measures along the way.

Looking at the competitive landscape, Anthropic’s main competitor, OpenAI, has also established a strong foothold in New York. They have secured 90,000 square feet of office space in the Pac Building in Soho.

Last year, OpenAI’s Sam Altman shared insights on AI’s potential to uplift the city’s economy during a meeting with local business leaders.

In June 2025, OpenAI released a report suggesting that New York City could evolve into the global epicenter of the intelligence era, contributing substantially to revenue, job creation, and growth.

This would mean, as noted in the report, if the U.S. economy could grow even just 1 percentage point faster annually, over ten years, it would translate to nearly $3 trillion in wealth—more than New York’s annual GDP.
