Radical Left’s Shift in Tactics Amid Protests in Minnesota
As protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) unfold in Minnesota, a new report suggests that there’s a growing readiness among some radical left groups to engage in what they describe as “armed combat” within the U.S.
A recent manifesto, which details strategies for “organizing an insurrection” and achieving the “complete annihilation” of political adversaries, has resurfaced on an extremist blog. It had initially been published in October. This is part of a broader trend, according to a report from the Security Policy Center, that indicates the left is increasingly embracing confrontations with federal agents, especially in the context of ongoing protests in Minnesota.
Interestingly, an activist recently reported an incident in South Minneapolis, where he claimed he was assaulted while documenting barricades and vehicle checks reportedly set up by protesters. Tensions are clearly high as activists reacted strongly when he recorded vehicles believed to belong to ICE agents.
Counterterrorism analyst Kyle Shiderer noted that social media accounts linked to anarchist and anti-fascist movements are showing a noticeable rise in support for armed extremism, even if it’s hard to quantify precisely. He pointed out that this support appears to include an increasing number of firearms trainers and leaders of armed organizations. The situation has been influenced by various violent incidents, including the assassination of political figures and attacks on ICE facilities.
Critically, the author of the anarchist manifesto took aim at the ICE Watch group, labeling it merely “reactive” in their approach. Meanwhile, Shiderer highlighted that the manifesto suggests methods for “winning the U.S. government’s war against humanity,” including tactics to seize control of U.S. territory. He compared these ideas to recent anti-ICE demonstrations in Minneapolis.
The manifesto unapologetically states the goal of occupying and dominating divided U.S. territory through force, aiming to eliminate political opponents. In Minnesota, activists have employed debris to impede traffic, check license plates, and prevent ICE vehicles from entering, even leading to confrontations with reporters.
One journalist recounted being assaulted while attempting to inquire about the ICE license plate database, facing hostility instead of answers, all while his phone was threatened to be stolen.
The manifesto explicitly outlines the right-wing as a significant adversary in this struggle, asserting that their mere existence could pose a risk of becoming counterinsurgents. It calls for their total neutralization and removal from so-called “liberated areas,” urging activists to consider how to address these factions as essential for their broader goals.
