Anti-Semitic Vandalism Targets American Council of Israel in Los Angeles

The American Council of Israel (IAC) in Los Angeles faced anti-Semitic vandalism over the weekend, prompting an investigation by local law enforcement into possible hate crimes.

The graffiti was found outside the Shepherd Community Center in Woodland Hills, which is not just the IAC’s LA regional office but also a gathering place for the local Israeli-American and American Jewish communities. The perpetrators left behind an unsettling display on the sidewalk, featuring an “SS symbol,” a swastika painted alongside the word “burn,” and additional graffiti that even stained a nearby cardboard snowman.

Further signs of vandalism were noted along the entrance to Highway 101, where messages linked to Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movements appeared, along with more anti-Semitic graffiti scattered throughout the area.

The IAC is currently collaborating with LAPD’s Topanga division as the investigation unfolds. It’s reported that security footage may have captured images of the suspects, which could aid in their identification.

CEO Elan S. Carr, who previously served as a US special envoy for combating anti-Semitism, expressed strong disapproval of the act. He stated, “We are appalled at the sleazy anti-Semitism behavior at our own community and office gateways.” His emphasis on the seriousness of this issue is notable, especially against the backdrop of rising anti-Semitic sentiments nationally.

This incident has emerged amid concerns raised by advocacy groups about a growing trend of anti-Semitic vandalism and harassment across the country. Carr remarked, “Around the world and across our country, we have seen an astounding historical rise in anti-Semitism. We fight it and strive tirelessly to ensure history doesn’t repeat itself.”

Despite the fear that such acts could instill, Carr affirmed a resilience against hate crimes, declaring, “This incident will not threaten or block us.” He emphasized a commitment to not just endure but to strengthen the community’s resolve against anti-Semitism for future generations.
