AOC acknowledges the chance of running for president: 'I want to transform the country'

Ocasio-Cortez on Potential 2028 Presidential Run

During a recent event at the University of Chicago’s Institute of Politics, U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez addressed questions about her ambitions for 2028—specifically, whether she might run for president. Democratic strategist David Axelrod brought this up, prompting Ocasio-Cortez to clarify her motivations.

She remarked that people often assume her ambition is tied to seeking titles or political positions. “What’s funny is they assume my ambition is a title or a seat,” she stated. Instead, she emphasized that her true goal is to bring about significant change in the country. “Presidents come and go. Senate, House seats, elected officials come and go,” she pointed out. For her, ideas like single-payer healthcare and workers’ rights are much more enduring.

Ocasio-Cortez expressed a preference for decision-making rooted in the current state of the nation rather than any long-held fantasies about holding a specific office. “I make decisions by waking up in the morning, looking out the window and observing the conditions of this country,” she stated. She believes that staying focused on how to improve the future is more important than any title she could hold.

Having just recently met the minimum age requirement to run for president, Ocasio-Cortez is now among a list of potential Democratic candidates for 2028, which includes notable figures like California Governor Gavin Newsom, former Vice President Kamala Harris, and others. This demonstrates that she’s being considered seriously within her party for future leadership.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, who is also interested in a presidential bid, remarked on the strength of potential Democratic candidates, expressing that he doesn’t yet know his own future plans. “I don’t know what I’ll be doing after — I hope I win reelection, after,” he said, adding that he is dedicated to supporting a Democrat win in the next election.

On the Republican side, current Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are seen as leading candidates. Former President Trump even hinted at their potential strength as a duo, suggesting that they could be an unstoppable force if they worked together.
