Progressive Leaders Rally for Zoran Mamdani in NYC
New York City is buzzing as progressive figures like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Bernie Sanders join mayoral candidate Zoran Mamdani for a “New York Is Not For Sale” rally at Forest Hills Stadium in Queens. This high-profile event is just days ahead of Election Day, when early voting kicks off, marking the culmination of a fiercely contested mayoral race that Mamdani has surprisingly made relevant on a national level.
“Zoran Mamdani represents a refreshing take on politics,” said Sanders, reflecting his status as a long-standing progressive voice and former Democratic presidential candidate.
The three of them, all identifying as Democratic socialists, are energizing the party’s progressive base. This surge comes amid a backdrop of frustration within the party, especially following significant losses in 2024 and widespread discontent with President Donald Trump’s policies.
Earlier, Sanders criticized certain Democratic leaders for not treating Mamdani with respect during the campaign, declaring, “This is our man!”
Earlier this year, when Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez launched their “Fight the Oligarchy” tour, they drew large crowds, energizing Democrats eager for direction. “As mayor, I won’t run a billionaire-funded administration,” Mamdani stated, pledging to advocate for NYC’s workforce.
This rally follows several high-energy events. Just recently, Sanders and Mamdani participated in a virtual “Get Out the Vote” event, and they’ve held town halls in Brooklyn discussing their vision against oligarchic influences.
During the Labor Day parade, the two leaders marched with union members in Manhattan, and their quick photo op in Astoria went viral, showcasing their growing popularity.
This momentum has been crucial; both Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez were among the first to support Mamdani’s campaign, helping him clinch significant backing in a primary field crowded with 11 candidates. His biggest surprise? Defeating the well-known former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who many thought would be a shoo-in for the nomination.
Mamdani’s strategic alignment and mutual endorsement with progressive Comptroller Brad Lander solidified his support, particularly with the complexities of ranked-choice voting.
Cuomo’s independent campaign has since added to the electoral drama, leading to a heated general election process. Following Trump’s choice of words, labeling Mamdani a “100% communist lunatic,” Mamdani firmly stated his identity as a democratic socialist, distancing himself from the derogatory terms.
The New York Democratic Party faced scrutiny for withholding its backing of Mamdani after Trump’s comments. He’s proposed ambitious, yet controversial campaign strategies—think free public transportation, city-operated grocery stores, and free childcare—all financed by tax hikes on the top earners in New York.
After a prolonged silence, Governor Kathy Hochul finally came out in support of Mamdani last month. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries also threw his endorsement behind him recently, although Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer remains on the sidelines.
Pressure is mounting on either Mayor Eric Adams, running as an independent, or Cuomo to bow out and consolidate support for Mamdani. Adams recently endorsed Cuomo, raising eyebrows.
In a twist, powerful business figures have urged that Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa withdraw to secure a clearer path for Cuomo, showcasing the stakes involved.
According to the latest poll, Mamdani is leading significantly among registered voters, holding a 21-point advantage. Among likely voters, he pulls 52% support against Cuomo’s 28% and Sliwa’s 14%. It’s shaping up to be a fascinating race, and as we edge closer to the polls, all eyes will be on Mamdani’s next moves.
