U.S. House Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) criticized Robert Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots, for allegedly trying to “line up” stadium owners to prevent rapper Macklemore from performing due to his comments about Israel.
Kraft’s attempts to stop Macklemore from taking the stage at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, have raised questions about what influence he had in persuading other venue owners to do the same elsewhere. Ocasio-Cortez, often referred to as AOC, expressed her views, suggesting that this situation is about more than just a couple of artists. It’s, in her words, a concerted effort impacting broader discussions.
“Look at what Robert Kraft did to coordinate the stadium owners to stifle that specific kind of speech,” she mentioned in an interview, implying that the actions reflect a more significant issue beyond just one performer.
“It’s about how a few elite stadium owners can effectively prevent discussions around major topics, like the situation in Gaza, from being addressed.”
She went on to highlight that this kind of censorship could extend to other important issues, claiming that a handful of influential owners might jeopardize the careers of those who dare to speak out.
Interestingly, Kraft, who is Jewish, actively campaigns against antisemitism, making his stance on permitting certain artists particularly noteworthy. It isn’t surprising that he wouldn’t want Macklemore—who has been critical of Israel—using his stadium as a platform.
The crucial aspect here is that Gillette Stadium is privately owned by Kraft Sports + Entertainment, and it’s notable for being one of the few stadiums funded entirely without public money.
If Ocasio-Cortez were to argue that publicly funded venues shouldn’t ban artists for their viewpoints, it wouldn’t apply here. Kraft owns the venue, complete with the land and infrastructure surrounding it.
Moreover, both the U.S. Constitution and Massachusetts law allow private property owners to choose who can perform on their premises, especially when the decisions stem from personal beliefs.
