AOC Criticized for Misleading Statement on Senate and Jim Crow Laws

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a Democratic Socialist from New York, has come under scrutiny for her comment suggesting that the U.S. Senate was established based on racist Jim Crow laws.

During a discussion about the Democratic Socialists of America’s radical agenda, she expressed support for the idea of disbanding the Senate and remarked that the organization was “founded by Jim Crow.” However, critics pointed out that the Senate was created well over 100 years before Jim Crow laws were enacted, making her statement historically inaccurate.

Ocasio-Cortez said, “We’re all frustrated. I don’t support the filibuster. I do not support elements of this organization as we know it… you know, it was founded by Jim Crow.”

This has led to backlash, with many pointing out the inconsistency in her argument. Jim Crow laws, designed to enforce racial segregation, were enacted long after the Senate’s establishment in 1789.

Senator Ted Cruz from Texas commented, “This is what happens when you don’t teach basic U.S. history.” Similarly, Senator Mike Lee of Utah added that “’Jim Crow’ on the far left means ‘what I hate,’” emphasizing that the Senate existed well before these laws.

Entrepreneur Tony Selga criticized her perspective, stating, “She’s a whole century out of date,” arguing that she tends to view American systems solely through the lens of racial oppression without adequately checking facts.

Amid criticism, some have defended Ocasio-Cortez, arguing that her remarks were directed at the filibuster rather than the Senate itself. It’s vital to note that discussions about the filibuster date back to the 1850s, which predate the Jim Crow era.

The Democratic Socialists of America gained momentum in recent years, as their candidates have managed to defeat many establishment Democrats in primaries. However, they still face pushback over their radical policy proposals from various factions within the Democratic Party.
