AOC’s Campaign Spending Raises Eyebrows

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) has continued to allocate campaign funds in Puerto Rico, drawing criticism for reportedly lavish expenditures on meals, entertainment, and lodging. Last year, she stayed in high-end hotels in San Juan while speaking out against the city’s gentrification.

Recent year-end campaign finance reports, released over the weekend and relevant to the approaching November midterm elections, show AOC’s fourth-quarter spending. After facing backlash for her previous spending, she added nearly $4,000 in expenses at Hotel Palacio Provincial in San Juan. Overall, her expenditures in Puerto Rico during the third quarter alone neared $50,000, which included significant sums for extravagant dinners and venue rentals at the same San Juan Arena where she was spotted dancing at a Bad Bunny concert.

Her fourth-quarter spending mirrored previous reports, indicating a trend towards costly accommodations at four- and five-star hotels, as well as gourmet meals. In total, AOC spent roughly $53,500 on these luxury lodgings and experiences in 2025.

This included dining in upscale restaurants where meals frequently exceed $100 per person, like a sushi establishment in New York City known for a $150 tasting menu, alongside fine dining in Las Vegas and high-priced cocktails in San Juan.

Critics have pointed out what they perceive as hypocrisy in her actions, particularly regarding her self-identified socialist values. Mark Bednar, a Republican strategist, commented wryly on her choices, suggesting that if AOC has presidential aspirations, she must clarify how her campaign spending aligns with her messages about inequality.

Many see her spending pattern, especially at luxury venues, as a sharp contrast to the struggles faced by her constituents. Danielle Turner, a former Queens resident turned political strategist, expressed her disappointment, feeling AOC’s actions disconnect her from the real issues affecting her district.

Turner noted that differences exist between AOC and those from her district, emphasizing that while AOC may try to embody the identity of a local representative, her choices suggest otherwise. “When she has a fancy event, she opts for resorts in Puerto Rico instead of local venues,” she observed.

Further highlighting AOC’s spending habits, she has patronized upscale restaurants with hefty prices. For instance, at CATCH in Las Vegas, a meal could easily run $225, and her culinary adventures included a $150 tasting menu at Sushi Ouiji.

During the third quarter in Puerto Rico, AOC’s campaign reported spending over $10,000 on catering and meals, notably at premium restaurants where even cocktails command significant prices. Critics emphasized that while she spends on luxury, the neighborhoods she represents continue to experience economic challenges.

As AOC grapples with public perception and her expenditures in light of her political identity, questions about her priorities linger, especially as she continues her fight to maintain a relevant narrative around her campaign.
