Democrats on Capitol Hill have little sympathy for former President Trump, who is struggling to come up with a $464 million appeal bond that is due in a week.

“He’s bankrupt and he’s willing to sell the country for a dollar to make whatever he needs,” New York Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez told Fox News on Wednesday.

Former President Trump has until Monday to secure nearly $500 million in appeal bond after a New York judge found him liable for civil fraud. Legal experts consider Trump’s options after failure to secure $464 million appeal bond: ‘Uncharted territory’

Late last month, a New York Court of Appeals judge denied a request by the 2024 Republican front-runner to delay payments of $464 million owed as a result of the default. Attorney General Letitia James Civil fraud lawsuit.

Trump has until Monday to secure bail for his appeal. If he did not do so, Mr James had previously warned that she would seize his assets. These could include prominent New York City properties like Trump Tower and 40 Wall Street.

Although there was no jury involved in the trial, Rep. Jahana Hayes said, “A jury of my colleagues made the decision on this case.”

“That’s not in the hands of Congress,” added Hayes, a Connecticut Democrat. “So I think people should follow the law.”

“If you didn’t want your property to be seized, if you didn’t want to be fined, you shouldn’t have committed the crime,” Rep. Sean Kasten, D-Illinois, said of the civil suit.

Trump’s lawyers said in a court filing this week that acquiring bonds of “this magnitude” is “unprecedented for a private company” and “practically impossible.”

“It seems very punitive and politically oriented and overwhelming,” said Rep. John Moolener.

“I don’t know anyone who could provide that kind of funding,” the Michigan Republican added.

Rep. Michael Cloud said he hasn’t read all the details of the former president’s case, but the possibility of a seizure is alarming.

“What we are seeing is [Department of Justice] It is being used as a weapon against the American people in many ways, and President Trump is its primary target,” the Texas Republican said.
