Apple Launches Digital ID Feature for iPhones
Apple has introduced a new “Digital ID” feature, enabling iPhone users to upload their passport information into the Apple Wallet. This update was announced and rolled out on Wednesday.
With this feature, U.S. iPhone users can create a digital ID by scanning the photo page and chip of a valid U.S. passport, along with providing a selfie for verification. Currently, it is available only for U.S. residents and is designed for domestic identity verification at TSA checkpoints across more than 250 airports in the United States.
However, it’s worth noting that this Digital ID can’t be used for international travel or border crossings, and there’s no option for users with passports from other countries at this time. Additionally, it won’t replace a physical passport.
Users can add the Digital ID through the Wallet app by scanning their passport and then activating it similar to how they would make a purchase via Apple Pay. This feature expands on the current support for state-issued driver’s licenses in the Wallet and is initially being released in beta for checkpoint use.
“With the launch of Digital ID, we’re excited to expand the ways users can store and present their identity — all with the security and privacy built into iPhone and Apple Watch,” said Jennifer Bailey, vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet.
This development will enable air travelers to show identification even if they haven’t obtained a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license yet. While the company promotes the Digital ID as a convenience, some users on social media have expressed concerns about the idea of consolidating identification into one digital hub.
Ray Vahey, founder of BitChute, raised alarms on X, arguing that the Digital ID represents more than just convenience. He posited that it’s a step toward mandatory digital identity systems being adopted globally, evident in the EU, UK, Australia, and Canada. Vahey emphasized the potential risks, questioning who would control access to these systems and what would happen if someone became locked out. He cautioned against moving toward a future where essential freedoms hinge on digital credentials, hinting at possible implications of increased surveillance and control.
Setting Up the Digital ID
To set up this feature, users can follow these steps:
- Open the Wallet app on your iPhone.
- Tap the “+” button in the top right corner.
- Select “Driver’s License or ID Cards,” then choose “Digital ID.”
- Follow the prompts to scan your passport and complete biometric verification.
