Apple Unveils Touchscreen MacBook Pro, Marking a Design Shift
Apple has made a significant change by introducing its first touchscreen MacBook Pro, a notable departure from its traditional laptop design philosophy. This launch comes with new models that feature higher starting prices.
The redesigned 14-inch MacBook Pro is set to begin at $2,899, which is higher than the $2,199 starting price of the M5 Pro model released in March. Meanwhile, the 16-inch variant will start at $3,399, an increase from the previous model’s starting price of $2,699.
It’s important to note that the $700 price differences are based on Apple’s advertised starting prices and not direct comparisons of identical configurations. The new models come with different hardware and features, of course.
This shift represents a new direction for Apple, which has typically reserved touchscreen technology for devices like the iPhone and iPad, while relying on traditional keyboards and trackpads for its laptops.
Touchscreen Features and Display Upgrades
With the new models, users can now scroll through web pages, zoom in on images, and interact with applications directly on the screen, though the traditional keyboard and trackpad remain intact.
Additionally, Apple has updated the display technology to an OLED screen, which the company claims enhances brightness, contrast, and color accuracy compared to earlier models.
The laptops are available in both 14-inch and 16-inch sizes, offering M5 Pro and M5 Max processor options. Those equipped with the M5 Max will see higher starting prices, as the 14-inch version starts at $4,499, up from $3,599 for the prior model, while the 16-inch starts at $4,799, compared to the previous $3,899. It’s worth mentioning that these comparisons again involve different base configurations.
Battery Life and Dynamic Features
Apple claims that the new laptops provide up to 24 hours of battery life, matching the maximum advertised battery life of the previous generation. The company has also incorporated Dynamic Island, a feature previously found on iPhones, to show notifications and other important information on the laptop screen.
In addition, Apple is launching a 14-inch MacBook Pro featuring an M6 processor for $1,999, though this model lacks the touchscreen and OLED capabilities of the more expensive versions.
Preorders for the touchscreen MacBook Pro will open on October 28, with the official release set for November 6.
