Apple TV+ Delays Premiere of Savant Following Assassination

On Tuesday, Apple TV+ announced the postponement of its upcoming thriller drama Savant, featuring Jessica Chastain, after the assassination of a conservative activist, Charlie Kirk.

An Apple TV+ representative told Variety that the series will be rescheduled for a more suitable release date, which was originally set for September 26.

“After careful consideration, we decided to postpone Savant,” the statement read. “We appreciate your understanding and are looking forward to releasing the series at a later date.”

As reported by Variety, the series draws inspiration from a 2019 Cosmopolitan article that details “top secret investigators known as Savant” who infiltrated an online hate group to prevent a significant domestic terrorist attack.

The show, adapted by Melissa James Gibson, is based on a real person from the Cosmo piece, although her identity is kept secret. In the series, the character Jody lives near Cincinnati with her husband Charlie (Nnamdi Asomugha), who is stationed overseas.

It’s evident that Savant aligns with the pressing issues facing America today. It addresses a group of primarily white men who feel a sense of ownership over their country, fueled by hatred, prejudice, and misogyny. They openly express intentions to harm those they deem “others.” Interestingly, Donald Trump isn’t mentioned at all in the series. Savant serves as a nuanced character study and a well-paced thriller focused on one woman’s mission to thwart terrorism.

Apple TV+ did not provide specific reasons for the delay, but the announcement followed closely—about two weeks—after the assassination of Charlie Kirk by Tyler Robinson, whose motivations appeared to be influenced by leftist ideologies.

Reports indicate that Robinson expressed frustration over Kirk’s hatred, stating he could no longer “negotiate some hatred.” This sentiment adds another layer to the discussions surrounding the series and its themes.
