April CPI: Inflation rose a bit last month

US Inflation Update

April saw a slight uptick in inflation, exceeding the Federal Reserve’s target, as the influence of increased tariffs is set to impact consumer prices in upcoming months.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which measures a range of everyday items like gasoline, food, and rent, increased by 0.2% last month, leading to an annual inflation rate of 2.3%. This marks the lowest annual rate since February 2021.

These numbers came in a bit lower than economists had anticipated; LSEG had forecasted a monthly rise of 0.3% and an annual figure of 2.4%. The rise in inflation followed an unexpected drop in March, which recorded a 0.1% decline. However, April’s overall inflation rate remained unchanged.

The core price index, which excludes the more volatile categories of food and energy in order to better represent underlying trends, rose by 0.2% compared to the previous month. This increase was slightly below expectations, with a year-over-year growth aligning with forecasts at 2.8%. The overall monthly numbers had previously shown a 0.1% increase a month earlier.

The report indicates that inflationary challenges in the US economy continue, even with efforts to bring rates closer to the Federal Reserve’s 2% target in recent years.

High inflation puts a significant financial strain on many US families, making it harder for them to cover basic necessities like food and rent. Those with lower incomes feel the pressure most acutely, as they dedicate more of their already tight budgets to essentials and find it tougher to save.

In terms of food prices, there was a slight decline of 0.1% in April, although prices increased by 2.8% annually. Specifically, the cost of food at home saw a 0.4% decrease that month, representing a 2% drop from the previous year, while prices for dining out rose by 3.9% over the same period.

This is a developing story; updates will follow.
