Arch Manning Apologizes for Reaction to Controversial Meme

Arch Manning, the quarterback for the Texas Longhorns, has issued an apology for his reaction to a viral AI meme that depicted his coach, Steve Sarkisian, slapping ESPN reporter Holly Rowe.

Manning shared his apologies on Instagram, referring to his previous remarks as “insensitive.”

“During my press conference yesterday, I made an insensitive comment about an AI video, and honestly, there’s nothing funny about it. I realize it’s easy to say I didn’t mean it, but my words and actions clearly hurt many people. I take this seriously and am truly sorry,” he stated.

He specifically addressed Rowe, expressing regret for the impact his comments had on her. “I have great respect for her and am thankful for the grace she showed me. I need to be more mindful in the future,” he added.

Rowe responded to Manning’s apology, expressing gratitude and noting a private conversation they had regarding the matter. “I appreciate our discussion about this, which we’ll keep between us. Apology accepted. Let’s move forward respectfully,” she said.

At a press conference on Monday, Manning was asked about the viral memes that circulated following his team’s dramatic comeback against Ohio State. He mentioned having seen a few AI edits, including a particular one of Sarkisian, which made the reporters laugh.

“Did you all see that one? It’s pretty funny,” he remarked, laughing. “The one where he slaps Holly Rowe? That’s hilarious.”

His comments drew backlash from several female journalists who criticized both Manning and the reporters present for their amusement at the AI-generated slap. One reporter, Tricia Whitaker, shared her outrage: “Imagine if Holly Rowe’s face in that vile AI video belonged to your daughter, wife, or sister. Would it still be funny? This is troubling on multiple levels.”

Whitaker emphasized that this isn’t about being “too sensitive” or “easily offended.” She felt it was inappropriate for everyone in the room to laugh about such content. The meme originated from Sarkisian’s abrupt post-game encounter with Rowe, where he skipped questions, gave the “Hook ’em Horns” sign, and celebrated with his teammates instead.
