Serial Killer Rex Heuerman Faces New Life Behind Bars

Rex Heuerman, a notorious serial killer, has started his new life in a grim prison situated in the remote Adirondack Mountains of New York, close to the Canadian border. This facility, known as Clinton Correctional Facility and often referred to as “Little Siberia,” has been operating since 1845 and is infamous for housing some of the most dangerous criminals in the country.

Heuerman, who admitted to murdering eight women, will be joining other infamous killers like Joel Rifkin and Heriberto Seda within the prison walls. State prison spokesperson Thomas Maley mentioned that Heuerman would undergo classification and evaluation before being fully integrated into the prison’s routine.

Clinton Correctional is the largest maximum-security prison in New York State. Its cells are quite small, about 6-by-8 feet, usually outfitted with just a steel bed, a toilet, a sink, and a modest writing surface.

At 62, Heuerman’s new neighbors will include Rifkin, 67, serving a staggering 203 years for murdering 17 prostitutes, and Seda, who is serving a 232-year sentence for killing three individuals and injuring five others in the early 1990s. Seda’s crimes were influenced by the infamous Zodiac Killer, as he sought to mimic his actions.

Another occupant of the prison, Artemio Sanchez, passed away in custody in 2023 while serving a 75-year-to-life sentence. Known as the “Bicycle Path Rapist,” he has a disturbing history of killing three women between 1990 and 2007.

Other notable criminals at Dannemora include Michael Valva, a former NYPD officer sentenced in 2020 for the tragic death of his 8-year-old autistic son, whom he left out in freezing temperatures.

This prison has also been in the spotlight for a dramatic escape by two inmates, David Sweat and Richard Matt, in June 2015. Their meticulous escape plan, aided by prison staff, drew significant media attention. They broke through the steel wall of their cell and navigated a complex network of pathways, ultimately escaping through a manhole. Their three-week pursuit covered 75 square miles of dense forest.

Following the escape, Matt was shot by law enforcement, while Sweat was apprehended alive just two days later.

This notorious escape story led to a 2018 true crime miniseries titled “Escape at Dannemora,” directed by Ben Stiller.
