The National Weather Service has issued a lake-effect snow warning for the entire Great Lakes region.

In an X post Friday, the National Weather Service said heavy snow is occurring downwind of the Great Lakes and could make travel in the area difficult or impossible.

The warning will last through the weekend and expand to counties in at least five states, including Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York.

Lake-effect snow is caused by cold air moving over the warm waters of the Great Lakes. It forms clouds and dumps 2 to 3 inches of snow per hour.

So far, snowfall totals have already exceeded 40 inches in parts of Pennsylvania.

New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) officials urged individuals to stay off the roads.
