Are attacks against free speech to protect US or “religion”?

The New York Times recently published an editorial titled “The First Amendment is Out of Control.”

In his article, law professor Tim Wu argues that arguments about free speech are currently being used to protect corporate interests and harm ordinary people.

Discussing internet regulation, Wu wrote, “While such regulation is not necessarily perfect, it is a legitimate tool that democratic governments can use to counter private power.”

“The next stage of this battle will likely be over regulating artificial intelligence. I worry that the First Amendment will be stretched to protect machine speech at significant human cost,” he continues.

“I agree with that 100%.” Glenn Beck Comment: “This is something I’ve been warning about for about 30 years.”

But then Wu starts to veer into dangerous territory.

“The right to free speech has been hijacked to suppress human sovereignty in favor of corporate and machine power,” he continues.

“No, there’s a difference between an individual and a government, and between regulation and a proposal,” Glenn counters. “If you want to regulate, then regulate. And instead of passing it through the executive branch, pass it through Congress. Let’s have that discussion.”

“I think it’s individual rights that will prevail in that,” he added, noting that Wu doesn’t fully understand what the First Amendment really is.

“You can speak your mind without fear of censorship or persecution,” Glenn explains. “That doesn’t make you popular, but it does mean that governments and powerful organisations can’t do anything to you or stop you.”

“If suddenly the church took the lead and said you can’t say this, would you be happy? How many people on the left believe in burning the flag? You have the right to do that,” he continues.

But the powers that be are already behaving more like church than government, with teenagers recently being charged with felonies for something as innocuous as leaving skid marks on a rainbow-colored crosswalk.

“What else is it but religion?” asks Glenn.
